2. Find Peers To Help You

Step Two | Find Peers To Help You

Starting a new group can be hard to do alone. Try to find peers (other people living with stroke, etc.) to join you in setting up a peer support group. Having a team can make the work easier and more enjoyable!

You can try to:

  • Ask your social worker, family doctor, or other healthcare professionals (like physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, or hospital stroke teams) to help you find other people who have had a stroke.
  • Reach out to regional stroke networks or local organizations that support stroke survivors, like March of Dimes Canada or Heart & Stroke. They might help you find peers in your area.
  • Post on social media platforms (like Facebook, Instagram or BlueSky) to connect with others.
  • Put up flyers in places like the local library, doctors’ offices, grocery stores, community centers, or religious/spiritual centers.
