1. Check For Existing Groups
Step One | Check For Existing Groups
Before starting a new peer support group, check to see if there is already one in your community that you could join. It’s a good idea to look around and see what already exists.
You can try to:
- Talk to your healthcare or social service team.
- Look for information on groups in local program guides.
- Ask your doctor, stroke team, stroke navigator, or social worker about local peer support groups.
- Connect with local stroke organizations like March of Dimes Canada, Heart & Stroke, etc.
- Search online for “peer support stroke group” along with your city, town, or province.
- You might find a local group or a virtual group you can join from anywhere.
If you find a group that fits your needs, reach out and ask about joining. If you can’t find a group that works for you, move on to the next step.
